Dressing case of black and gold figured silk and velvet with four pockets containing comb in extra case and metal mirror (turtle and cricket design). Gift to Louise Welles Murray from Raphael Pumpelly_ 1866 Note with object: Raphael Pumpelly_ 1837-1923_ (gradson of George Welles_ a pioneer of Athens) geologist and Harvard professor made a five year trip around the world in 1860-65_ visiting Japan just six years after Commodore Perry opened it to Europeans. . . . He gave this little Japanese lady's dressing case with comb and mirror_ and rice papers to his small cousin Louise Welles (Murray)."
